Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer, New York, NY

Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer (New York, NY): Our client, a $500M hedge fund, is seeking a sharp, earnest, and diligent lawyer to join their team in a newly created capacity.  This new hire will report into the founder of the firm and be given significant autonomy and responsibility in this vibrant, entrepreneurial environment.  This role is ideal for someone career-driven, assertive, honest, and meticulous.  The founder is keen on rewarding hard work and finding dedicated talent to join a lean team in a meaningful capacity. 

Key Points: 

  • First time hire for a dedicated legal professional to join a successful fund
  • Individual will be given a seat at the table to drive business processes, interface with investment professionals and investors
  • Diverse role covering all areas of legal matters inclusive of regulatory compliance, employment, deal, and investor matters


  • Oversee and manage the firm’s legal and compliance program; work closely with outside compliance consultants and outside counsel
  • Structure new draw down facility and future co-investment vehicles
  • Provide counsel on matters such as NDAs and contracts with service providers; update subscription documents and handle related legal matters
  • Drive compliance best practice in all areas including annual review, mock audit, cyber risk, and use of expert networks; develop and upgrade relevant compliance practices, procedures, policies, and manuals
  • Update and/or develop specific internal policies (ESG, D&I, etc.) 
  • Assist with some investor relations and marketing efforts ahead of a fulltime IR/marketing hire inclusive of: addressing inbound questions from LPs, completing DDQs, IDD and ODD inquiries, and systematizing investor leads to-date into a usable database


  • J.D. required
  • 5-8 years of relevant legal experience within a law firm’s investment management practice or directly within an asset manager
  • Some familiarity with the Investment Advisers Act and Compliance programs preferred
  • Confident, yet have humility and a low ego.  You can be shy!  You cannot be entitled.
  • Fairness and honesty must be fundamental for you.  You should expect it and give no less.  
  • Must be able to receive pointed and direct feedback and be prepared to provide pointed and direct responses.
